HORIZONS MINI GRANT AVAILABLE TO THE VALLEY COMMUNITY
In 2005 Chewelah became involved in the Horizons program to help improve community life. As a result the people of Chewelah now have a Farmer’s Market, adult education at the high school and other benefits such as a kiosk in the park. The Horizons program has now arrived in Valley! The focus of this program is to help local citizens work together for the common good and to alleviate the poverty in our midst. A grant is available to us from the Northwest Area Foundation and the WSU Extension Service has already begun the process to help make Valley eligible for it.
Last fall at least 50 people gathered in Valley at an “action forum” to talk about what poverty looks like here, how it can be reduced and how we as a community can improve what we already have. Ideas that came from this meeting include a community garden, trade workshops, a coop market for bartering as well as for buying and selling, youth activities, computer training and a community center. Last December three community members attended training in Spokane for three days so that they can host “Leadership Plenty” sessions in Valley. “Leadership Plenty” is a training program that teaches essential skills such as building partnerships, managing conflict and taking action so that communities can work together to solve problems and create opportunities.
In order to receive the Horizons grant, at least 20 Valley community members must attend all nine sessions of “leadership Plenty” before the end of May. The next session is at the Valley Grange on Tuesday, February 3rd from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and people who attend will be “visioning” what we as a community can do to thrive. There is no cost and all materials are free. In order to sign up or for more information, please contact Krisan LeHew at (509) 690-8400 or Glenda Noggles at (509) 937-2096. Also please contact Krisan at krisan@wsu.edu and Glenda at gnoggles@centurytel.net.
The Horizons program presents an exciting and exceptional opportunity for all of us in the Valley community! Please take action and get involved!
